Let students explain in their own way what the word means.
Understanding the meaning of a word is a necessity when it comes to building reading comprehension. There are several teaching techniques that can help you teach vocabulary effectively.
Engagement is key.
- Using words in a relevant and ‘real’ manner allows students to personalize their use of the vocabulary words.
- Don’t expect students to give you a definition that might be found in the dictionary.
- Encourage them to put words in a sentence.
- Ask them for a word that means the same.
