Steps to Taking the GED

The GED is made up of 4 subjects, broken into separate exams. It’s best to take one subject at a time and students usually start with their strongest subject. Following is an overview of what is one the GED, by subject area.

Mathematical Reasoning includes Basic Math, Geometry, Basic Algebra, Graphs and Functions (115 minutes)

Reasoning Through Language Arts includes Reading for Meaning, Identifying and Creating Arguments as well as Grammar and Language (150 minutes)

Social Studies includes of Reading for Meaning, Analyzing Historical Events, Using Numbers and Graphs in Social Studies (70 minutes)

Science includes Reading for Meaning, Designing and Interpreting and Using Numbers and Graphics in Science (90 minutes)

Step 1: Study, Study, Study….

Students need to study content while improving their reading, math, and writing skills. They also need practice taking subject tests. Once you and your student feel they are ready, they can contact me to schedule a practice GED Ready Test. We have scholarships available to pay for both the GED Ready Tests and the Official GED Tests.

Step 2: taking the GED Ready Test

At this point, your student should have an account at https://ged.com/ If they don’t, encourage them to create one. It’s free and necessary to complete testing. The GED Ready Test is a practice test they can take in our office. Their score is a great indication of how well they will do on the official GED.

Step 3: TAKING THE REAL THING

Once the student receives a passing score (145+) on one of the GED Ready tests, they need to log on to https://ged.com/ and schedule to take the official GED.  Both Durham Tech and Alamance Community College offer the GED. If they need assistance with scheduling just please let me know

Step 4: Remind Student: THEY ARE NOT THE TEST.’

We want them to do their best. We believe in them but remind your student that ‘they are not the test.Their score is not a reflection of them as a person. It’s a score; a hoop to jump through in order to progress to a better job or further their education. And if they don’t pass, they will have plenty more attempts.
